Privacy Policy | Motorcar was totaled, unsure what to exercise with license plates (Virginia) | Forum Index » Off-Topic | | | Author | Message | 01/16/2019 17:37 Bailiwick: Machine was totaled, unsure what to do with license plates (Virginia) | Bearding | The DMV website is not super helpful. Tried to drop the machine from insurance today but they said in Virginia, I'm required to surrender the license plates outset to the DMV before they tin have the car off insurance. Only can't I simply hold onto the plates and transfer them to our new automobile in one case we get it? I see on the DMV website that I can put the plates on a temporary hold if I'm going to driblet the vehicle from insurance. So could I put them on hold, drop the vehicle, and and then when nosotros get a new car (hopefully next week), have the dealer put those plates on the new car? Is a dealer able to do that? I imagine they'd just have to change out the registration stickers correct? When we bought a car a couple of years ago, nosotros traded one in and they simply did any they exercise with their paperwork and transferred the plates for us right there at the dealer. Am I amend off just doing nothing right now with the plates and insurance and waiting til we get a new car? I am afraid if I put the plates on hold nosotros'll run into problems at the dealership when we ask them to re-issue those plates to the new car. I don't really go how it all works. Likewise, somewhat related...when I donated a motorcar years ago, I was told I could keep my plates in one case they were mailed back to me. They're nonetheless in my posession somewhere. Practise I demand to turn those in??? The DMV has never said anything to me. It'south been most five years. I reported the car donated to the DMV website so they know I no longer own the car. | | | | 01/16/2019 17:43 Subject: Re:Car was totaled, unsure what to do with license plates (Virginia) | Bearding | OP over again - Nether instructions on selling/donating car, DMV website says this: If the plates are not transferred to some other vehicle, you may return them to any DMV client service eye for recycling or destroy and dispose of them yourself. Meanwhile, on another page titled "Surrender of License Plates" information technology says this: Sold, traded, or no longer operate your vehicle? Moved out of Virginia? If so, Virginia Code section 46.2-707 requires you to immediately surrender your license plates and/or vehicle registration to the nearest DMV customer service center. Then, conflicting info. Not to mention, I didn't sell, trade, or donate my car...I totaled it. Then I don't even know how to notify the DMV that the auto is no longer in my posession since that's not fifty-fifty an option on their website. | | | | 01/16/2019 17:46 Subject: Car was totaled, unsure what to do with license plates (Virginia) | Anonymous | Just take/postal service them to the DMV. Non that difficult. | | | | 01/sixteen/2019 17:46 Discipline: Car was totaled, unsure what to practice with license plates (Virginia) | Anonymous | Yous need to turn in the license plate and transfer the title to your insurance. If yous practise not transfer title and plow in the license plate to DMV yous should expect to continue to accrue the car tax on that vehicle even if information technology'due south totaled. Your insurance agent should have explained this to you.
